چکیده

Buffer-constrained R-D optimized rate control for video coding is investigated in this work. A frame level bit allocation is first presented based on a model of the relationship between the rate (R) and nonzero (NZ) coefficients. With the modelled RNZ relationship, a quality feedback scheme is proposed to generate VBV (Video Buffer Verifier) compliant bitstream with assured video quality. Then, a R-D optimized macroblock level rate control is described by jointly selecting the quantization parameter and the coding mode of macroblocks in I, B and P pictures for both progressive and interlaced video. To avoid the irregularly large MV or one single isolated coefficient, we extend the set of coding modes of MB by including zero MV and zero texture bits as two more candidates. Finally, fast heuristics are developed to reduce the computational complexity of R-D data generation and the Viterbi algorithm (VA) in R-D optimization, which achieves coding results close to the optimal one at a much lower computational cost.

A rate control algorithm at the group of picture (GOP) level is proposed in this paper for variable bit rate applications of the H.265/HEVC video coding standard with buffer constraint. Due to structural changes in the HEVC compared to the previous standards, new rate control algorithms are needed to be designed. In the proposed algorithm, quantization parameter (QP) of each GOP is obtained by ...

MPEG-4 video object-based rate allocation with variable temporal rates

This paper describes a bit allocation algorithm that can achieve a constant bit rate when coding multiple video objects (MVO’s), while improving the rate-distortion (R-D) performance over the reference method for MPEG-4 object-based rate control [1, 2]. In object-based coding, bit allocation is performed at the object level and temporal rates of different objects may vary. The proposed algorith...

Accurate estimation of R-D characteristics for rate control in real-time video encoding

In real-time video communications, the rate control strategies must be utilized to satisfy the end-to-end delay and prevent the encoding buffer from over/underflow. In other words, to acquire the best possible video quality with a minimal quality variation in the playback video, an accurate Rate-Distortion (R-D) model of the video source is critical in optimizing the bit allocation for video co...

A rate control scheme for H.26L video transmission

In some video applications, the variable bit rate (VBR) video bitstream will be transmitted over a constant bit rate (CBR) transmission channel, in which a channel buffer is employed. In this study, a rate control scheme for H.26L video transmission is proposed. The target number of bits for each frame is first obtained. Two rate-quantization (R-Q) models are proposed to approximate the relatio...
